NFL players visit border to help immigrant children

Redskins cornerback Josh Norman and Saints linebacker Demario Davis visited South Texas this week on a mission: help immigrant children.

Norman told USA Today that after seeing reports of children separated from their parents at the border under President Donald Trump’s since-discontinued zero-tolerance policy, he felt compelled to help.

There wasn’t a lot I could do about what they had been through & there current situation. But I knew I could at least bring a smile to their faces even if it was just for a brief moment in time. Yesterday I saw first hand the struggles these kids & their families endure an inhuman treatment. I employ all of you who see something to take action where and when it counts. We didn’t Start this but we sure can help you end this!

From the fresh approach with their promising quarterback to their updated jerseys, here are the key adjustments for the 2018 Titans going into training camp.

Going into his critical fourth season, Marcus Mariota is working with his third head coach and third offensive coordinator. The Titans need to shatter the exotic smashmouth of Mularkey and let Mariota loose as a downfield passer under LaFleur, who did wonders with Jared Goff in Los Angeles.

LaFleur comes from West Coast principles, but his imprint on Goff, who averaged 8.0 yards per pass attempt, was tied to stretching the field. LaFleur also will devise the best ways to take advantage of Mariota’s special athleticism. Thanks to the Titans’ established running game, Mariota is in a favorable position to deliver on more deep balls off play-action.

Former Cardinals QB Ryan Lindley takes graduate assistant job with San Diego State

Former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Ryan Lindley is returning to his alma mater to serve on the team’s coaching staff. San Diego State announced Thursday that Lindley was joining Rocky Long’s coaching staff as a graduate assistant secondary coach. Lindley was a sixth-round pick of the Cardinals in 2012 and appeared in nine games with six starts over three seasons, including the team’s 27-16 Divisional Round playoff loss to the Carolina Panthers in 2014.

He also spent time with the San Diego Chargers, New England Patriots and appeared in one game for the Indianapolis Colts in 2015. He threw for 1,372 yards with three touchdowns and 11 interceptions in his 10 career regular season games played.

Starlin Castro (R), 50 percent, Miami Marlins at Colorado Rockies (LHP Tyler Anderson): Castro has been pretty ho-hum from a fantasy perspective this season. He’s batting just.272/.319/.376 and ranks 17th among second basemen on the ESPN Player Rater. The good news is that this weekend brings the Marlins to Coors Field, where Castro is a career.321/.360/.524 hitter in 20 games. He also gets the platoon advantage against Anderson, who sports a 5.13 ERA at Coors this season.

Winston has not been notified of his suspension, nor has the team, Rapoport added.

The Buccaneers said they don’t expect to issue any statements until there’s an official announcement from the league.

Winston’s looming suspension surrounds an alleged groping incident with a female Uber driver in Scottsdale, Arizona, in March 2016. No police report was filed. The NFL began an investigation on Nov. 17, 2017.

Winston released a statement later on Nov. 17 denying the incident.

A news organization has published a story about me regarding an alleged incident involving a female Uber driver from approximately two years ago. The story falsely accuses me of making inappropriate contact with this driver. I believe the driver was confused as to the number of passengers in the car and who was sitting next to her. The accusation is false, and given the nature of the allegation and increased awareness and consideration of these types of matters, I am addressing this false report immediately. At the time of the alleged incident, I denied the allegations to Uber, yet they still decided to suspend my account.

The Yankees agreed, and with spring training winding out, LeBlanc was released.

The Yankees were nice enough to let us know that they didn’t see me making the team at that point, LeBlanc said. They said ‘If you want to see what else is out there, we’ll let you go.’

LeBlanc doesn’t blame the Yanks for giving up on him instead of waiting and hoping for a return to his previous good forms, such as when he pitched to a 3.77 ERA in 2016 for the Mariners and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Ramirez strained his lat and they thought initially it would be a 10-to-12 day thing, LeBlanc said. So I make one start and do pretty decent, then I make a second start that was pretty decent, then Ramirez had a setback and here we are.

Using a five-pitch repertoire that includes a lot of well-located slow fastballs, LeBlanc has been one of the most effective starters in the game over the last two months. In his nine starts, he’s 3-0 with a 2.06 ERA.

What’s the secret to his success?

Second-Year Undrafted Punter Rigoberto Sanchez in NFL.com’s Under-25 Team More Specialists rarely get a great deal of attention in football. When Mike Vanderjagt shanks a field goal in the playoffs against the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2004, he creates an everlasting image that defines his career. Never mind the fact that he is currently the sixth most accurate kicker of all time or that he hit all 33 of his field goal attempts in 2003 — making him one of seven kickers to ever have a perfect season. It is his failure in the playoffs and a verbal run-in with former quarterback Peyton Manning in the media that define his time in Indianapolis. Similarly, punters are mocked when they are drafted in the first two days of the NFL Draft.

The Eagles and their fans probably realize that if Chip Kelly hadn’t ruined the team earlier this decade

There are no regrets in Philly, because nobody wants to mess with the butterfly effect.

That being said, hiring Kelly as head coach in 2013 was a colossal mistake—even worse than throwing $60 million at an aging Nnamdi Asomugha in 2011 or picking Brandon Graham one spot ahead of Earl Thomas in 2010.

Three picks later, the Giants took Collins, who became a first-team All-Pro with five picks, four sacks and 125 tackles as a sophomore and made the Pro Bowl again in his third season.

It’s not a sexy mistake, but it’s a mistake nonetheless. And it’s not as though they can chalk it up to the draft’s being a crapshoot, because Collins was widely projected to be a first-round pick. He slid, and Green Bay failed to take advantage.

After rising through the ranks with the Philadelphia Eagles, the 46-year-old Grigson spent five years as the Colts ‘ GM before being fired following the 2016 season.

Landing in Seattle gives Grigson a chance to revamp his reputation in an established front office led by GM John Schneider.

Starting in 2026, there will be 16 groups of three teams, with the top two teams in the group advancing into the expanded round-of-32 knockout stages. The finalists will still play seven games.

The new format will increase the amount of games at the tournament from 64 to 80. Mexico and Canada will each host 10 games, while America will get 60. All games from the quarterfinal round onto the final will be played in the USA.

Dodgers not yet ready to send Cody Bellinger down to minors after tough start

The Dodgers aren’t giving up on Cody Bellinger just yet.

Manager Dave Roberts told media Sunday he’s not yet ready to send the struggling slugger down to Triple-A even though Bellinger entered Sunday’s action slashing just 226/.300/.415 with eight home runs and 25 RBIs.

We’re not there yet, Roberts said. Obviously we’d have to really think through it. We haven’t got to that point yet. But you can see it’s been tough sledding for him for first two months of the season.

He renegotiated his current six-year, $54 million deal prior to last season, reaping incentives that pushed his compensation over $10 million in 2017. Those bonuses aren’t included for this upcoming season, in which he’ll make $8 million in base salary.

Asked Tuesday if he was in the process of getting his contract redone, Gronk smiled before saying, I don’t know. I’m trying to.

Would he like to see that happen before the start of the season?

Who wouldn’t? he said simply.

We just have a great team. It’s hard to find any holes on this team. I don’t think there are any, shortstop Carlos Correa said, via ESPN.

The Astros were down 4-3 in the eighth inning when Correa blasted a solo home run to tie the game. Singles by Evan Gattis and Marwin González added two more runs to end the eighth, and a Correa sacrifice fly in the ninth inning sealed the win for the Astros.

I take confidence in our lineup versus anybody, Gattis said.

As a quarterback and someone who’s striving to be great, it’s crazy to see guys like Dustin Johnson able to do what he does. It’s just so cool to watch greatness in action.

The Jets, of course, are hoping for greatness from the player they chose out of USC with the third-overall pick in the draft.

Darnold — who said, I’m really bad at golf, but am trying to get better — has designs on being great as an NFL quarterback.

He spoke of a funny moment he witnessed Saturday from which he hopes to take away a lesson.

Wentz welcomes chance to recruit LeBron to Philly

From the moment the Golden State Warriors completed their sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2018 NBA Finals, LeBron James and his pending free agency became the topic de jour in the sports world. Prominent basketball players like Joel Embiid, Enes Kanter and others almost immediately began publicly recruiting James to their respective teams.

As one of the most decorated players in NBA history, James will find no shortage of suitors over the coming months. Still, a gesture from an athlete of Wentz’s caliber carries significant weight, enough to at least grab James’ attention, and the quarterback doesn’t seem to mind using his star power for the benefit of Philadelphia.

Hopefully, he knows we were there, Wentz said.

Terence has done a good a job, Edwards said Wednesday, via the Vikings’ official website. That’s a hat that he can wear, and we’re glad we’ve got him.

Newman briefly played safety in 2015, and Wednesday’s move came after he swapped jersey numbers with safety Andrew Sendejo, who is sidelined with an undisclosed injury.

But being an established veteran in addition to his flexibility to play various positions in the secondary has helped Newman as one of the team’s elder statesman.

That way, you’ve got to have that versatility in that room, that if somebody gets injured or something like that, the next guy’s gotta be up, Edwards said, via the team’s website. And he’s [a great example], especially for the young guys — ‘Hey, the more that you can do, the longer you’re going to be able to stick around and help us win football games.’

Newman, who turns 40 in September, continues to prove throughout his accomplished career the more a player can do, the more his value rises.

Nate Solder on criticism of Patriots culture: ‘The fun is playing well’

Nate Solder on criticism of Patriots culture: ‘The fun is playing well’ More Nate Solder played seven seasons with the Patriots, made it to four Super Bowls and won two of them. Normally it would go without saying that the left tackle had fun playing in New England — but it’s 2018 now, and in these trying times, we can assume nothing. Since Cassius Marsh started speaking out about his short stint with the Patriots, bemoaning the way they used him and accusing them of making football so horrible that he considered quitting, other players have joined the chorus.

We performed well last year as a defense – our record didn’t show it – but now it’s all about the little things – the little things to get us there, the little things that get you beat, too, Trevathan said. So we want to go ahead and eliminate those minor mistakes.

It’s little things that can grow over time, and we want to nip them in the bud right now. That’s why I’m glad we’re out here, I’m out here right now playing with this defense right now and getting a sense of where we can be better. And that’s what we want heading into camp. It feels great heading into camp, and stopping the little things right now will help us tremendously.

Jackson’s thinking goes like this:

The Temple product flashed at times as an occasional starter as a rookie before making a run at 1,000 yards (he finished with 941) while scoring seven touchdowns in his second NFL season.

The 25-year-old has been arrested in back-to-back offseasons and could be facing a suspension as a result, but the Jets have little reason to cut bait on a high-potential receiver slated to cost them just $633,334 in the final year of his entry-level deal.

Now Cleveland could be down to one final game with James. The three-time champion can opt out of his $35.6 million contract and test free agency this summer, and it may be time for the 33-year-old to find a team capable of beating the Warriors.

Like Donald Trump, Fox News gets caught lying about Eagles

Fact: No player on the Eagles took a knee during the national anthem during the 2017 regular season, post season or Super Bowl last season.

That is not what you might believe, however, reading the tweets of President Donald Trump or watching FOX News on Tuesday morning.

Trump has been extremely critical of players in the NFL who have protested during the national anthem, and at least initially came out in strong support of the league’s new policy that will punish players who protest during the anthem.

I think that is good, Trump said of the new rule. I don’t think people should be staying in locker rooms. You have to stand proudly for the national anthem. Or you shouldn’t be playing, you shouldn’t be there, maybe you shouldn’t be in this country. You have to stand proudly for the national anthem and the NFL owners did the right thing if that is what they’ve done.

But don’t assume Houston will be the same team in the postseason as it is right now.

Despite head-to-head success and a better record heading into play on June 4 (37-17 vs. 37-24), Houston owns a much better run differential (+122 vs. +78) and boasts the title of World Series champion.

A Yankees-Astros ALCS rematch could flip to New York this time, but Houston’s willingness to go the extra mile for a top-end reliever before the July 31 trade deadline could change things in a significant way.

Josh Breaux is another guy with a really good makeup, Oppenheimer said. He’s still young as a junior college guy, but his arm is huge and he has raw power. His ability to hit has really matured this year. With Breaux, we think we have an impact tools guy who’s a catcher. You’re talking about a big, strong player who shows up and people understand right away why you took him.

Does Giants’ Rhett Ellison see difference in Pat Shurmur as head coach?

XFL names Oliver Luck as commissioner and CEO

eagles_095Vince McMahon’s rebooted XFL has picked veteran sports executive Oliver Luck as its commissioner and CEO for the league’s relaunch in 2020.

Luck, 58, the father of Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, played four seasons under center with the old Houston Oilers in the early 1980s. Since his retirement he’s held a number of sports executive posts, most recently as the NCAA’s executive vice president for regulatory affairs. From 2010-2014 he worked as the athletic director at his alma mater, West Virginia University. He’s also held high-level posts with Major League Soccer and the Houston Sports Authority.

I’m not going to sit here and point fingers at anybody. Would I like to win this game? Absolutely so would everybody else in here, Sale said. It would be kind of selfish for me to say something like that, especially looking at my last two leading up to this one.

Boston right-fielder Mookie Betts was eligible to come off the disabled list, where he’s been with a left abdominal strain, but did not Friday.

Philadelphia defeated the Patriots in the Super Bowl last season to earn a trip at the White House, but like other teams with the same opportunity, chose to allow players the option to remain home.

Last week, The NFL announced a new rule banning players from kneeling in protest during the playing of the national anthem before games. If they choose not to stand, they can stay in the locker room, but if they violate the new rule, their teams will be fined.

Astros shortstop Carlos Correa missed his second straight game since coming out after seven innings against Seattle on Wednesday because of soreness on his right side. Correa said an MRI didn’t show anything abnormal, but manager A.J. Hinch said the club won’t rush it. I think what gives us comfort is that he hasn’t had any pain since the night that he got injured. He’s not feeling anything when he coughs, when he breathes, when he laughs, any sort of body movement, Hinch said. The Astros have a day off after this four-game series.

Astros: C Brian McCann was activated from the disabled list after missing nine games with right knee soreness, snapping a 1-for-29 slide with a single in the ninth inning.

Rangers: SS Elvis Andrus took light batting practice. He’s been on the disabled list since April 13 after breaking his right elbow when he was hit by a pitch. Andrus is eligible to come off the 60-day DL Monday.

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie hints he could return to the Giants

eagles_096Free agent cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie has said he expects to be in some team’s training camp. Might his new team be his old team?

Rodgers-Cromartie played in Giants safety Landon Collins’ charity softball game yesterday, and he hinted at the possibility of returning to the Giants this year.

But because this is the Patriots, they are always prepared, considering contigencies and finding new guys to do their job in Josh McDaniels’ offense.

There’s a direct replacement for Lewis in rookie first-round draft pick Sony Michel. And while the answers to replace Cooks and now Edelman aren’t so linear, expect them to be clear soon.

Parting ways with Amendola at 32 and knowing Edelman is also 32 and coming off a torn ACL, the Patriots addressed the slot position twice by signing Jordan Matthews and drafing Braxton Berrios in the sixth round.

Besides, college football coaches aren’t putting the notions in the heads of the players. The notions had been hatched from the moment the players first showed dominance against their peers; the college football coaches are merely giving giant buttons that long to be pressed a gentle nudge.

Bronco Mendenhall, the third-year Virginia football coach, said Friday at a UVa Board of Visitors meeting that he’s trying to get his players not to think about playing in the NFL. Mendenhall explained at part of the discussion that he routinely asks his players to explain what their futures hold.

Almost all say, even at [Virginia], my goal is to play in the NFL, Mendenhall said, via the Lynchburg (Va.) News & Advance. And then my simple response is, ‘And?’ It’s amazing the uncomfortable silence that immediately proceeds that.

But silence, even of the uncomfortable kind, is far better than misguided, ill-informed, and inaccurate noise. Which is what Mendenhall supplied, by rattling off statistics that have no apparent basis in fact.
